Thinking About Photos

I found the tips for photography to be very helpful when doing the photo blitz assignment. The changing my perspective by changing yours was one that I used when doing the assignment. I took a picture of the trees outside and I changed my position so that I was lower and the trees looked like they were hanging over me. The create depth tip is my favorite, I use this all the time when I take pictures and it makes pictures look so much better when there is depth in them.

The gallery I looked at was the Davis-Monthan Air Force Base. I noticed that the photographer used the tip of look to the light. All of the images in this gallery are stunning because the lighting in them is perfect. In some pictures the photographer also used depth to add more to the photo. This photographer photographed abandonment in a really good way by showing all the aircraft that was torn apart and left behind. This is good for the apocalypse because it looks like some nuclear war happened where all of the aircraft got blown up and tore apart.

Below are the pictures from the photo blitz assignment. I really liked this assignment, and I thought it was going to be easier than it actually was. While I was doing it, I kept trying to be creative with finding things around my house that would relate to the prompt for the picture. I was running around doing this but I actually finished in a pretty short amount of time! I liked this assignment, because we were able to use the tips for better photography throughout this assignment to help us better understand photography.

My Third Week Nearing the End

This week, I did a lot of writing. Not that I minded it, because I love writing and being creative with it. I started my week off with doing The Daily Create on Tuesday. This was a lot of fun because I was able to be creative with it and create a mini story.

I did two other Daily Creates, the first was on backwards day so I decided to post a picture of a guy riding his bike backwards…you don’t see that everyday! The second was the Generator Powered Stories, the story that I got was very interesting and probably something I or anyone would never read.

Throughout the week, I took each assignment slowly and thought about them each. The first one I did was the reading reflections of the two short stories we had to read. I actually really enjoyed reading the short stories, especially¬†Finis.¬†I thought this story got interesting as it climaxed. This was actually the story I used to create an alternate ending. The ending I created for this short story was much different from its original ending. Instead of ending life, I saved Alice and Eastwood’s life. I liked creating an alternate ending for a story that was already published because I was able to end it the way that I thought it would end best.

The Amazon product¬†review was probably the funniest assignment I have ever done. Just because anyone in the world could see my comment about the product and how it helped me survive the apocalypse! So people might think I am crazy if they ever come across my comment, but that’s okay. ūüėČ Finding a product wasn’t very hard because I just thought of a survival kit and I happened to come across the handy¬†bracelet.

I really enjoyed doing all of these assignments, because  I really like writing. I enjoyed being able to choose two assignments out of the Assignment Bank on my own because that gave the class some freedom and the ability to choose what we are interested in with things that relate to the apocalypse. I chose the Apocalypse Terms of Service and The End Is For Everything.

Question of the week:

In the event of an apocalypse, I think that I would be the person to share my supplies with those around me in need. I am a very helpful and caring person so I wouldn’t be able to see someone suffer knowing that I have things that could help them to survive. I would definitely help and share my supplies with my family and loved ones but also the people that really need them.

The End is for Dogs

Everyone is gone. My humans are gone. I am left without a home and I am all alone. I have been searching for my people for a couple of days now and I am starving. I haven’t found any people, but I have found another fellow dog. He says his name is Jack and he is trying to find his people too! We don’t know where they went…maybe on a vacation? They never leave without saying goodbye or see you later. Jack and I are on the search for food, since we don’t have our normal food anywhere out here in these weird woods, we have to find something. I smell something…I smell something that smells familiar. I start running and I hear something, it sounds like water. I haven’t been this happy since three days ago! I am so hungry and thirsty, this water is going to taste delicious! I go to take a big lick at the streaming river, but this water tastes like dirt. But I have found a fish, I am going to catch it and me and Jack are going to share it.

A year has gone by and the world is full of dogs just like me, everywhere! We are so happy and we have figured out how to hunt other animals. When we bark, we scare the birds. When we jump in the water, we scare the fish to where they are frightened enough that they freeze, that’s when we get them! The world is so great now, even though there are days that I miss my family and my home. They didn’t want me, so I had to make it on my own. Along the way I found so many other dog friends that I love this life even more! We never have humans yelling at us and we can eat whatever and use the bathroom wherever we want! Life with just dogs is the best life I have lived.

Finis…An Alternate Ending

I am going to be writing an alternate ending for the short story Finis.

Original ending:

“Kiss me!” she whispered suddenly, throwing her arms around his neck. He could feel her trembling. “Say you love me; hold me in your arms. There is only an hour.”

“Don’t be afraid. Try to face it bravely,” stammered Eastwood.

“I don’t fear it‚ÄĒnot death. But I have never lived. I have always been timid and wretched and afraid‚ÄĒafraid to speak‚ÄĒand I’ve almost wished for suffering and misery or anything rather than to be stupid and dumb and dead, the way I’ve always been.

“I’ve never dared to tell anyone what I was, what I wanted. I’ve been afraid all my life, but I’m not afraid now. I have never lived; I have never been happy; and now we must die together!”

It seemed to Eastwood the cry of the perishing world. He held her in his arms and kissed her wet, tremulous face that was strained to his.

The twilight was gone before they knew it. The sky was blue already, with crimson flakes mounting to the zenith, and the heat was growing once more intense.

“This is the end, Alice,” said Eastwood, and his voice trembled.

She looked at him, her eyes shining with an unearthly softness and brilliancy, and turned her face to the east.

There, in crimson and orange, flamed the last dawn that human eyes would ever see.

New, alternate ending:

“Kiss me!” she whispered suddenly. Eastwood thought to himself that her request was odd and like every world ending movie where there are only a man and woman left on Earth.

“No Alice, I can’t. We aren’t going to die. We can’t be the only survivors out there.” Eastwood told her in a very asserting tone.

Alice started to burst into tears thinking she was going to end her life alone and unhappy, as she had always been.

Suddenly, the two looking into the flame saw something bursting out of the “second sun.”

“Could it be? Could there be more life somewhere else?” screamed Alice to Eastwood. “What is that? Who is that?!” She continued on.

That’s when a big white space-like ship came flying slowly through the air. They both waved their hands as this was their only hope for life.

The floating ship came down and landed near them, they went running towards it. The ship opened and out came a new form of life.

Alice and Eastwood were thrilled to see these people that were different but not as much as they thought. These people were indeed people but with a little more robotic form to them.

Off went Alice and Eastwood in the flying ship to where the two suns collided.

The End.

Short Story Readings

The two short stories that I chose to read were Finis and There Will Come Soft Rains. These two stories were definitely interesting. With Finis, I thought that the author drew the audience in by having a climax that was crazy. At first I thought the story started off a bit boring because I felt it had many unnecessary facts in it that were really related to the story fully. Once the story started to get going with what they thought was the new star, then it really caught my interest. With There Will Come Soft Rains, I was immediately interested because I did not know what was going on, all I knew immediately was that the house seemed like a smart house run by robotic things, like the cleaning mice. I think this story could have probably elaborated more on what had happened in the past because I found myself guessing what happened and not really knowing exactly what was happening in the story.

I think that both stories did a great job with their descriptions on things. As I read both stories, I was able to get an image in my head of what was happening because they each described everything so well. In¬†Finis,¬†I think the author did a good job of describing the main characters of the short story because I was able to create an image of them in my head and he gave them all different personalities, which I liked. In the other short story, the author didn’t really have any characters as it was mainly about what was going on in this house.

Overall, I really enjoyed both stories, but I think I liked¬†Finis¬†more. Just because I was able to understand what was happening and I stayed interested. I like when I am reading stories and the author explains everything and doesn’t leave the audience kind of in the dark. Of course, creating your own assumptions for stories can be good, but I feel that¬†Finis was written exceptionally well and it kept the audience interested the entire time.

My Second Week Nearing the End

My second week nearing the end has been another great, productive week. I have been preparing and educating myself on The End. This week I decided to jump around and do things in a different order. I first started with the Daily Create that we all had to do.  I created my story about my day at work and the zombie apocalypse. The second Daily Create I did was the gate into another dimension and the picture I used for it was pretty creepy, because the entire apocalypse theme to me is a little creepy so I decided to stick with it!

I really enjoyed writing my story for the Tell It/Tweet It assignment we had. At first I thought this was going to be a little tricky because sometimes it takes a little while for my creative juices to get flowing, but I gave myself a few days to think about what I wanted to write. I think this assignment really helped me with digital storytelling in writing. I had a lot of fun with it!

I filled out the form for the course planning and the apocalypse archetype. For the archetype I talked about the survivalist characteristic because of The 100, all of the main characters are survivalist with the characteristics of being tough, intelligent, and headstrong.

The last thing I did was watch End Day, read the Routledge article, and I read an excerpt from the book “The Passage.” I think that End Day was informative in a way that not every apocalypse is about aliens or zombies. An apocalypse can be a natural disaster or a really contagious virus going around.¬† I feel that these opened our eyes more to what an apocalypse really is and why so many people are interested in them. I actually enjoyed watching and reading all of these because I feel that I learned more about the apocalypse which is going to help me in this class.

Question of the Week:

In the event of a zombie apocalypse, I would rather be turned into a zombie than everyone I love be turned into one. I think I would rather be turned into a zombie because I am one person rather than so many people I love. Either way I will be alone because no one can really interact with a zombie and I wouldn’t be able to interact with anyone. I just don’t think that I could watch everyone I love be turned into something they aren’t, so I would rather just be the sole person that gets turned into a zombie.

Looking forward to seeing what we will be doing this upcoming week. ūüôā

Apocalypse Starter Kit & Reading Reflections

I thought that End Day was pretty interesting, the cameraman needed a little bit of practice though. I thought that the apocalypse that were outlined in End Day, were pretty realistic in terms of them talking about it. Each one that was shown in the show is something that could potentially happen to our world.¬† While I was watching End Day, I just kept thinking that each situation could happen to us even though it is very unlikely. The scariest situation in my opinion was the contagious virus that was being spread throughout the world. People were getting hit with it and were dropping like flies. With the vaccinations that we have today, this probably won’t happen. It just seemed so realistic, because we always hear about little viruses going around, now imagine if they were as big as the one in End Day and people around just started dropping…pretty scary.¬†

In the Routledge SF article, I learned that some people think there is sexism in catastrophe fiction because the male is always the one who basically survives the whole thing. This article talked about how apocalyptic and post-apocalyptic fiction were very popular due to the fact that people just found it really interesting. I believe that people also find it interesting because they might have a thought in their head that these things could potentially happen one day, even though it is highly unlikely.

I read the excerpt from the book “The Passage” by Justin Cronin. I thought it sounded intriguing and something that I would want to read the whole way through. I am not usually a fan of reading nonfiction books unless they seem really interesting and this is one of those books.

In the Woods

We live in an area where not many people go. There are around five houses next to ours and we live down a long, narrow, gravel road. It may sound weird, but the view is breathtaking, the view of the water and sunset everyday is something I will never get tired of.¬† The house is huge and it has a ton of windows, but I feel at home here…unless I am alone. It was a normal Saturday night when I was hanging out with my family when my dad kept mentioning that there was car that had slowly drove down our gravel path but then turned around and left. We did not think much of it since we have a couple of neighbors and maybe the person driving just could not find the right house. It wasn’t until another car came down a couple hours later when we started getting a little spooked out. This wasn’t normal.

Around midnight a third car came driving down the path when they suddenly stopped at the house next to ours that no one lives in. The car then slowly started to drive closer to our house…they turned off their headlights and just sat at the end of our driveway. My dad and boyfriend quickly hopped in one of our cars and drove down to the car. My mom and I could hear them and my dad kept saying, “who are you?” “what are you doing here?” My heart was beating out of my chest, I was not going to sleep. At the time we had four little kids over, my little brother and my boyfriend’s three cousins. The four of them started to get freaked out because they wanted to know what was happening, but we couldn’t tell them so we just made up an excuse. My little brother is just too smart that he figures out everything, so he started to tell the other kids what was happening. This didn’t help the situation.

My dad and boyfriend came back and told us that the woman in the car wouldn’t show her face. She was crying and said she was lost. This, to us, sounded like a fake story and someone was really trying to rob our house. I wasn’t going to let that happen. Once she left, I walked outside to make sure that no one had gotten dropped off in the woods by our neighbors house. I didn’t see anyone, but as I was out there, I looked in the distance and saw a car just sitting at a house a couple houses down from ours. We immediately thought that they were robbing that house.

My parents decided to get in the car to see what was happening down there. I waited and kept the doors locked to make sure we were all safe. When my parents came back the news they had for us was something unexpected…

This little shack, where no one except for one guy lives, was having a MASSIVE party. How would we have known?! The guy is never there and no one really has parties like that down where we live. So, all three of those cars that kept creeping down our gravel road were just lost and couldn’t find the party house. That’s when I realized that I needed to stop thinking the worst and making the scariest assumptions possible in the middle of the night. I have never been so relieved to hear something like that in my life…I was able to go to sleep peacefully that night knowing someone wasn’t trying to rob us.
